A teenage boy has been killed when he was hit by a car on a Tasmanian highway on New Year’s Day.

Just before midnight on Monday, emergency services were called to the Tasman Hwy in Orielton by the driver of the car who stopped immediately and also other motorists who stopped to help.

The 16-year-old boy from Berriedale died at the scene.

Police believe the boy may have been lying on the road when a car struck him.

They also think he may have been travelling in a blue Mazda Tribute in the Orielton area prior to the crash and have urged anyone who saw this car to come forward.

The highway remained closed on Tuesday morning while police investigated, and drivers were diverted at Brinktop and Greens Rd.

“Our thoughts are with the boy’s family and loved ones,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
