A member of popular Australian band Ocean Alley has publicly apologised after he was caught shoplifting at a camping and fishing store in New Zealand.

Vocalist and keyboard player Lachlan Galbraith was forced to issue a statement on social media after a photo emerged of him putting something in his bag at Hiking and Fishing Queenstown.

The CCTV photo of Galbraith was posted online by the store on Sunday, who called the musician out, referencing the band’s hit song Confidence.

“Good to see the fellas in town for their performance at (the Rhythm and Alps music festival) tonight,” the store said.

“Unfortunately, it looks like there was just a little too much ‘Confidence’ in store today.”

The store said Galbraith had stolen a Yeti drink bottle lid. They asked him to return it before the band left town.

“We realise hydration is important, so no worries, but please feel free to return the Yeti Chug cap back before you leave town tomorrow,” the store said on social media.

“All the best for 2024 and the tour ahead.”

The post included the hashtags #outtheredoinit, #sticktomusicboss and #couldn’tmakethissh*tup.

The store’s post has since been deleted.

Later on Sunday, the store made a post on Facebook that appeared to suggest the issue had been resolved.

“Thanks to the guys from Ocean Alley for reaching out,” it said.

In an Instagram story on Monday, Galbraith admitted he had stolen a drink bottle lid and apologised for his actions, calling it a “complete act of foolishness”.

“It is a moment I am not proud of at all and one that I have deep regret and remorse for,” he said.

“I have reached out to the team (store) directly, and we have rectified the situation.

“I am so sorry for disappointing all of our fans, the team at the store and of course the band.”

Fans of the band called the behaviour “embarrassing” on social media.

Ocean Alley is playing at two upcoming festivals in New Zealand — Shake and Bake and Beach Break.

The psychedelic rock band was formed in 2011 and has six members: Baden Donegal, Angus Goodwin, Nic Blom, Lach Galbraith, Mitch Galbraith and Tom O’Brien.

Ocean Alley has released three studio albums, and took out Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2019 for its song Confidence.
